A familiar Paint editor that runs in your browser

Paint Online brings the classic Windows Paint workflow to any computer, tablet or Chromebook without installing anything. The toolbar has the tools you expect: a pixel-precise pencil, a fill bucket, a text tool with fonts, bold, italic, underline and an optional opaque background, an eraser, a color picker and a magnifier. Nine brushes cover everyday painting: the round brush, two calligraphy pens, airbrush, oil, crayon, marker, natural pencil and watercolor. Each brush stroke is applied as a single layer of paint, so the opacity slider behaves like real glazing instead of building up dark blotches.

The Shapes gallery includes lines, arrows, curves, ovals, rectangles, rounded rectangles, free polygons, triangles, diamonds, pentagons, hexagons, four-, five- and six-point stars, speech callouts, a heart and a lightning bolt. Shapes stay editable after you draw them: drag the handles to resize, drag the middle to move, change the color, outline, fill or thickness, and only then click elsewhere to commit. Hold Shift for perfect squares, circles and 45° lines.

Selections, crop, resize and layers

Use rectangle or free-form selection to move, copy, delete or crop part of the picture. Drag inside a selection to move it, hold Ctrl to stamp copies, drag the handles to scale it, or rotate and flip only the selection. Transparent selection drops the color-2 background while you move it, just like in Paint. The Resize and Skew dialog works in percent or pixels, and Image Properties changes the canvas size without scaling. You can also drag the handles on the right and bottom edges of the canvas.

Modern Paint added layers, and so does this editor. Add a layer for line art, another for color and another for text; hide, reorder, merge or fade them independently. The eraser removes pixels to transparency on upper layers and paints color 2 on the background layer, matching Paint's behaviour.

Private by design

Nothing you draw or open is sent to a server. Images are decoded, edited and encoded locally, and the autosave lives in your own browser storage. That makes Paint Online safe for screenshots of private documents, family photos and client work. Save as PNG, JPEG, WebP or BMP, copy the image straight to the clipboard, print it, or keep a layered project file to continue later.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the real Microsoft Paint?
No. It is an independent, free web editor modelled on the classic Paint workflow. It is not affiliated with Microsoft, but the tools, menus and shortcuts will feel familiar if you have used Paint on Windows.
Are my drawings uploaded anywhere?
No. Drawing, opening and saving all happen in your browser. Your work is autosaved only in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB) so you can restore it after closing the tab.
Does it support layers and transparency?
Yes. Use the Layers panel to add, duplicate, hide, reorder, merge and change the opacity of layers. Save as PNG to keep transparency, or save a .paintproj project to keep the layers themselves.
Which keyboard shortcuts work?
Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y undo and redo, Ctrl+A select all, Ctrl+C / Ctrl+X / Ctrl+V clipboard, Ctrl+Shift+X crop, Ctrl+E image properties, Ctrl+G gridlines, Ctrl+R rulers and Ctrl+S save. Letters switch tools: P pencil, B brush, E eraser, G fill, I color picker, T text, S select, U shapes. Hold Space to pan. Ctrl+W is reserved by browsers, so use the Resize button instead.
Can I remove the background of a photo?
Yes. Open the photo and press the magic-wand button. An AI model downloads once and then runs entirely on your device to make the background transparent.
